NEW!!! Metro Lakes District eNAVIGATOR - FEBRUARY 2011 |
|
Starting in December, your bi-monthly Council newsletter (the "eNavigator") will link you directly to the "News" section of the Metro Lakes website. Here, you will find updates regarding new events or upcoming happennings around the District. Here are three such items:
CONGRATULATIONS...Quality District 2010 That's right! Metro Lakes was named a 2010 Centennial Quality District! Thank you all for your dedication to Scouting and all your extra efforts this year. Our Centennial year was a lot of work for everyone, but was also a LOT of fun! Great job! Look for Quality District patches at the District Dinner this year, and more congratulations and accolades to come!
District Dinner: This is your LAST chance to register for the District Annual Dinner, February 10th, at St Charles Borromeo Church. The form is located here.
Silver Beaver: Metro Lakes was named a Quality District...and all based on the QUALITY volunteers we have! Another testament to that QUALITY is that Metro Lakes' will have FIVE volunteers recieving the highest award given by local Councils: the Silver Beaver. Please share your well-wishes and congratulations to the following outstanding MLD volunteer leaders: Al Douglass, Larry Nooyen, Terry Nooyen, Tom O'Mara, & Thomas Shaw. More info available here

NEW!!! Metro Lakes District eNAVIGATOR - DECEMBER 2010 |
|
Starting in December, your bi-monthly Council newsletter (the "eNavigator") will link you directly to the "News" section of the Metro Lakes website. Here, you will find updates regarding new events or upcoming happennings around the District. Here are three such items:
Metro Lakes on Facebook: While this is not a NEW development, it is worth a reminder. Metro Lakes District has a Facebook Group! We will be working more in 2011 to add important dates/reminders to our Facebook group, to help communicate in more ways with more people. Consider sending links to all your leaders. Search "Metro Lakes District" next time you are online checking your Farmville and join us!
District Report, 2010: In an effort to better communicate to our Unit leadership, sponsoring organizations, and community supporters, this year Metro Lakes District will be putting together an annual report of sorts. Along with the usual statistics and event reports, we want YOUR voice heard. If you have a short item (maybe a paragraph or two) about something Scouting-related that you participated in or witnessed this year, send it along to mevano@nsbsa.org along with pictures if applicable!! And look forward to the official "unveiling" at our annual District Dinner in February!
Community Awareness...build it, and they will come: I may have ALSO brought this up in previous Navigator articles, it is ALSO worth a reminder! I strongly believe that one of the simplest things we can do to advance Scouting in Minneapolis (and Richfield, AND St. Anthony Village!) is to remind the community of who we are and what we are doing. We are working to build that awareness at the District level: we are hard at work recruiting volunteers to serve as Public Relations coordinators, so that we can better streamline communications out to our local community papers (fun fact: did you know that between the three cities that make up Metro Lakes District, we have over 20 different community papers and magazines?!) But we need your help in building content. So send us your great Scouting stories, about events or individuals doing good things in your local area. Most community papers want a community focus, so it is helpful to tie in the area that your Unit is involved in. Pictures of smiling Scouts (in uniform or Scouting t-shirt) also help a lot! For more info, visit the Northern Star Council webpage and email mevano@nsbsa.org to help out with our District Public Relations group...I promise less than an hour a week!!
BONUS 4TH ITEM: Give the gift of Peace to your Charter Org! The International Peace Light is once again making its way from Bethlehem, hand carried by Scouts around the world. It will be arriving in Bayport, MN on December 12, and will be available to all Scouters to come "collect". We will also have it available at the Hulings (St Paul) Scout Office on December 15th. More details are available HERE. In this, the last month of our Centennial year, consider giving this international sign of peace to your Charter Organization as a holiday gift, and as a reminder of the impact Scouting has on our community!
Oh, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS from all of us at METRO LAKES DISTRICT!!

Embroidered
Centennial Ring Emblem

A new emblem released for the 100th anniversary designed to be placed around the World Crest emblem has been available now
in the Scout Shops since the end of July.
While little official information is available, the
ScoutStuff Facebook page has some notes of interest. The Centennial Ring Emblem was designed specifically
to be worn around the World Crest so it would NOT be appropriate to wear as a standalone temporary patch. The Centennial Ring Emblem patch is optional and can be worn around the World Crest on any official scouting uniform. |

Fall
Camporee Thank You
Many thanks to Troop 262 Scouts and Adult
Volunteers, as well as the Metro
Lakes District Camping Committee for putting on a GREAT 2009 Fall
Camporee. Over 200 Scouts and Adults participated in the
Camporee, held at Fort Snelling State Park this past weekend. Scouts worked
on two of three "trails" during the activities on Saturday -
American Heritage Merit Badge, Nature Merit Badge Trail, or the
Historic Fort Snelling Trail - completing most or all of the
requirements.
Despite cool autumn weather and dreary and drizzly skies, Scouts
hustled from station to station working on specific requirements
for the trail they were working on with excitement. Many volunteers
contributed their expertise and resources in order to provide one of
the best activities of the year for Metro Lakes Boy Scouts.
Pass on a note of thanks to Troop 262 by emailing their
Scoutmaster (Ry4an Brase) and letting them know how much you
enjoyed it. -
