Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader and Every Leader deserves Training. The Metro Lakes District in conjunction with the Northern Star Council and the BSA are proud to offer one of the best training programs available anywhere.  Adults and Scouts alike have a multitude of opportunities - required and supplemental - help provide all Scouts personal growth and knowledge that can be applied in all aspects of life.

A Scout leader is entitled to wear the Trained leader emblem when he or she has completed some basic but important training courses.

A direct contact Scout leader is considered fully trained and entitled to wear the Trained leader emblem when he or she  has completed the training courses and the specific training for their registered position.  Click the appropriate Scouting Program to find the training requirements for your position below

Fast Start Training
Fast Start Training is the first step for all new leaders and introduce Cub Scout Leaders, Boy Scout Leaders, Varsity Scout Leaders, or Venturing Crew Leaders to the Scouting program. All Fast Start courses can be completed through the Online Learning Center.

Youth Protection Training
Youth Protection training is required for all leaders who have direct contact with youth and should be taken immediately after a leader registers and before they meet with any youth members. At all times, youth safety is the number one priority. At the same time, adults need to know the rules for keeping themselves safe, too. Comprehensive Youth Protection training teaches all the do’s and don’ts of working with youth. The training is offered through the Online Learning Center, or it may be taken as part of an district or council training course

This is Scouting
This Is Scouting is a new online training session that replaces New Leader Essentials. Six Modules comprise the new This Is Scouting training: The Mission of Scouting, Programs for All ages, Scouting Is Fun, Scouting in the Community, Keeping Our Youth Safe, and Scouting’s Legacy. The training takes about an hour to complete and can be found at the Online Learning Center. .

Leader Specific Training
As the name implies, focuses on specific roles and responsibilities for the respective position. These courses are taught by informed trainers who know how to engage groups and make learning fun.  These courses are offered by the district or council as group training, or may be done as small groups or by personal coaching.

Supplemental Training
Supplemental training modules are designed to provide orientation beyond the basic training offered in This Is Scouting and leader-specific training. Each module is a unit of training that can be used as an outline for a group, for personal coaching, or for self-study. Most of the outlines should require about an hour to complete.

Wood Badge Training
Wood Badge has evolved into the premier leadership course of the BSA, strengthening a leader's ability to effectively work with groups of youth and adults.
